Bulat Aukhanov was born on the 13th of September 1938 in Semipalatinsk (Kazakhstan). Together with his family relocated to Alma- Ata in 1945.

1945-1955 Studied at the State School №28 named after I.V. Stalin. From 1946 simultaneously attended the Alma- Ata “Muzkhorkombinat” now - Choreographic Academy named after A.V. Seleznyev who’s pupil he was during the last two years there (1955- 1957). It is by him that he was directed to the Leningrad Choreographic Academy, which now bears the name of the great A.I. Voganova. There he underwent 2 year advanced training courses taught by U.I.Umrikhin.

1957-1959 performed as a soloist at the State Abay Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Almaty.

The drive to create himself, drove B. Aukhanov to win a highly competed for place at the State Lunacharsky Institute of Theatrical Art in Moscow, to study choreography. There from 1959 – 1964 he studied at the great R.V. Zakharov’s workshop who had the title of People’s Artist of Kazakh SSR and USSR. From that class B. Aukhanov graduated with distinction.

While a student at the State Institute of Theatrical Art in Moscow, on an ordinary visit back home to Almaty, Aukhanov produced a choreographic miniature “Sad Waltz” to the music of I. Sibellius, which was performed by leading performers of the Abay Theatre (SAATOB) I. Manskaya and V. Vasylyev. This particular production gave start to the creation of concert miniatures for the “Theatre of Two Actors” (I.Manskaya and B.Aukhanov).

In 1964 the Ministry of Culture of Kazakh SSR lead by minister Galimzhanova and later minister Omarov asked then 26 year old Aukhanov, to take on the position of a creative director of the Almaty Choreographic Academy. 1964-1965 worked as a choreographer and a performer at the Abay Theatre of Opera and Ballet.

1964-1967 created “Theatre of Two Actors” and worked in two creative directions: first direction being - the pages of Kazakh epos and second - choreographic miniatures to the music of various composers.

On the 1st of August 1967 Aukhanov founded first not only in history of Kazakhstan but also in history of the then USSR ballet group based on choreographic miniatures. It was given the name “Young Ballet of Almaty” where Aukhanov became a permanent director, choreographer, lecturer and performer.

In 1971 his ballet group was one of the first in the Republic to become a Laureate of the Youth Award of Kazakhstan”.

In 1975 the group was given a new title of a “State Production Group of Classical Dance of the Kazakh SSR”.

Together with classical productions in the shape of concert pieces, single and double act ballets, Aukhanov paid a lot of attention to the development and inclusion of national choreography elements into national dance as well as into modern neoclassical pieces.
